Surrogacy Motherhood

Surrogacy services is a legal method of reproductive system treatment in Portugal. Portuguese government forbade paying rewards to surrogates in order not to turn carrying the baby into a lucrative business. The first case with such services in Portugal was with a woman who voluntarily agreed to carry a baby for her own daughter.

Infertility is the inability of a married couple to get pregnant and give birth throughout the year, with an active sex life, without using contraceptives. Now this problem is widespread and relevant. According to WHO statistics, more than 20% of couples cannot conceive or give birth to children. And the number of such couples is growing every year.

Nowadays there is a tendency against surrogacy. For example, it’s not legal in Ireland. The Government of the country made attempts to work out special legislative base regulating surrogacy in Ireland but they were not completely successful.

Many same-sex couples want to create a full-fledged family with children, but the attitude towards LGBT people in most countries of the world remains sharply negative, and same-sex marriages, adoption of children by gays, lesbians are allowed only in several states.

For a long period of time hundreds of infertile couples found their surrogacy happiness in Thailand. But several world-scandal surrogacy journeys made the government of the country review the legal aspects of surrogacy in Thailand which has resulted in ban of the commercial surrogacy for foreigners.

Each year surrogate motherhood becomes more and more popular kind of infertility treatment but on a proper level surrogacy process is debugged only in few countries e.g. Ukraine, the USA, Georgia, Israel etc.

Surrogacy is one of the reproductive technologies. It helps couples who cannot get pregnant, bear and independently give birth to the baby. The main point of this method is that sperm and / or an egg is taken from the genetic parents, fertilized in laboratory conditions and implanted to another woman, who will bear, give birth to the baby and then give him or her to the genetic parents.

Surrogacy in Lithuania is actual but, at the same time, quite a controversial question which is  far from the constructive solution. Nowadays the main problem is the uncertain attitude of the government towards this point as surrogacy in Lithuania isn’t regulated like a method of ART.

Surrogacy in the USA has been highly-developed and wide-spread process since 1991 when Congress allowed the usage of such kind of infertility treatment. But despite its popularity, surrogacy in the USA is officially permitted only in 8 among 50 states. 4 states like Arizona, New York, Utah, Washington and federal district Columbia view surrogacy illegal.
