Egg Donation Process.
IVF and Egg Donor
In 1984 first successful pregnancy using egg donation was performed. Since that time due to the medical achievements egg donation has become quite a popular and effective method of ART.
Because of different pathologies of ovaries or some other reasons, very often women’s follicles stop their development and, at the same time, production of the eggs. In such cases, egg donation is used.
What is the process of egg donation?
Egg donation is a safe, anonymous and disinterested giving own eggs to another woman. To become a donor, women should undergo a series of medical tests (range of analyses, examination, gynecologist, geneticist and physician, psychological consultation). If all the results meet the requirements, a potential donor must sign several documents:
- the contract between the clinic and the donor;
- written agreement to perform the stimulation and ovarian puncture;
- written agreement of the husband.
When all documents are signed, the process of egg donation is divided into three stages:
Stage 1. Synchronization of the menstrual cycles. After cryopreservation the quality of the egg deteriorates significantly, so they are not freezed, and fertilized immediately after puncture. For safe egg donation and succesful fertilization of the recipient, it is necessary that the cycles of both women coincide. Synchronization of the menstrual cycles is best achieved with the help of the medicines (hormone injections or oral contraceptives).
Stage 2. Stimulation of ovulation of the donor. For growing a sufficient number of oocytes ( from 10 to 20) in the ovaries, hormonal injections are prescribed to stimulate follicular growth. The drug and its dosage are prescribed by the doctor individually. The size and number of eggs are evaluated with the help of ultrasonography every 3-4 days.
Stage 3. Puncture. The process of egg donation takes place under anesthesia and is absolutely safe and painless. The doctor punctures the follicles under ultrasound control to extract the eggs. The procedure lasts for 10-15 minutes, but the donor should stay in hospital some time more, to avoid complications.
Is egg donation safe?
Actually, the donation of eggs is a painless and safe method. Before you choose a clinic for this procedure, it is necessary to ascertain the quality of services it provides. First and foremost, you need to pay attention to the license on carrying out of assisted reproductive technologies. Next, you should examine experience and skills, as well as to search the Internet for reviews. If the information satisfies you, the last stage for the decision will be to consult a specialist. This is the only way to be sure that the procedure will be qualitative and will do no harm to the donor’s health.
