Egg fertilization process
Germ cells(spermatozoon and egg) which take part in the process of fertilization, have a half set of chromosomes. While they unite and form a zygote which has a full chromosomal set, it has also the unique genotype. At the same time the gender of your future child is determined.
During ejaculation the man produces 250 million of spermatozoa. Such a huge number is necessary to ensure that the sperm will go through a long way with obstacles before the process of fertilization of an egg will happen.
The fact that the man produces a huge amount of spermatozoa does not mean that they are ideal for fertilization. Approximately 85% of the sperm produced at the male body has no chances to fertilize eggs.
How many sperm cells are not produced, only nearly 1% penetrated from the vagina next to the cervix. And there is no guarantee that any one of them will long remain alive in the environment will reach the destination and fertilize the egg. Besides, male sperm is a foreign substance for a woman’s body which the immune system is always ready to resist.
When the chance of fertilization is the highest?
Once a month, during ovulation, a woman’s body is ready for fertilization. The mucus covering the entrance to the uterus thickens due to hormones, turning from obstacles into helping substance. At this point, the follicle cracked, which serves as a protective shell before, and the egg passes from the ovary through the abdominal cavity into the fallopian tubes. The fibers, which cover the fallopian tube from the inside, hold the egg and it stays there for 24 hours, there is the exact place of the egg meeting with a spermatozoon. The process of meeting of these two cells is called the fertilization process.
Then the fertilized egg stays in the fallopian tube and on the seventh day moves into the uterus, where it begins to look for a place to attach. At this stage, which lasts about 40 hours and is called implantation, the outer cells divide and penetrate into the uterine lining. Then within these branches the blood vessels will appear, they are converted into the placenta, with the help of which the baby will be fed until the birth.
Conditions for the successful egg fertilization
- a sufficient number of active spermatozoa with the correct morphological building ;
- normal environment of the uterus and fallopian tubes, which ensures the promotion of spermatozoa;
- moving of the egg in the fallopian tube, suitable conditions for the unification of gametes in the fallopian tube;
- the correct day of the cycle(ovulation) for fertilization and conception.
