Egg fertilization process

Germ cells (spermatozoon and egg cells) which take part in the process of fertilization have a half set of chromosomes each. They unite and form a zygote, which has a full chromosomal set. It has also the unique genotype. Thus, the gender of your future child is determined.

During ejaculation man produces 250 million of spermatozoa. This huge number is required, as the sperm will go through a long way with obstacles to fertilize an egg cells.

Egg fertlization process

Also it’s important to understand that it doesn’t mean that each spermatozoa is ideal for fertilization. Approximately 85% of the sperm produced by the male has no chances to fertilize egg cells.

It does not matter how many sperm cells are produced, only about 1% of them will penetrate from the vagina next to the cervix. Moreover, there is no guarantee that any one of them will remain alive in the environment enough reach the destination and fertilize the egg cell. Besides, sperm is a foreign substance for a woman’s body, which means the immune system is always ready to resist.

When the chance of Fertilization is the highest?

Once per month, during ovulation, a woman’s body is ready for fertilization. The mucus covering the entrance to the uterus thickens due to hormones, turning from an obstacle into a helping substance. At this point, the follicle, which serves as a protective shell before, cracked and the egg cell passes from the ovary through the abdominal cavity into the fallopian tubes. The fibers, which cover the fallopian tube from the inside, hold the egg cell and it stays there for 24 hours, there is the exact place of the egg cell meeting with a spermatozoon. The process of meeting of these two cells is called the fertilization process.

Then the fertilized egg cell stays in the fallopian tube and on the seventh day moves into the uterus, where it begins to look for a place to attach. At this stage, which lasts about 40 hours and is called implantation, the outer cells divide and penetrate into the uterine lining. Then within these branches the blood vessels will appear, they are converted into the placenta, with the help of which the baby will be fed until the birth.
