Surrogate mother (Gestational Carrier) is a woman who bears a child for childless spouses using a special kind of Assisted Reproductive Technologies – IVF (in-vitro fertilization) for pay. An embryo which is created using cells of the intended parents (in some cases it can be a combination with donor’s eggs or sperm) is transferred to the surrogate’s uterus. Despite the fact that a surrogate mother gives birth to a child, she isneither biologically nor genetically connected with a baby. That’s why, only intended parents are viewed to be real parents of the child.
Very often people mix the meanings of two notions: surrogate (gestational carrier) and a traditional surrogate. But their difference is too significant. A gestational carrier only bears a pregnancy and delivers a child for the intended parents unlike a traditional surrogate who is, at the same time, an egg donor. To avoid different misunderstandings and problems of the surrogacy journey, traditional surrogacy isn’t frequently used.
