Human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) is a kind of hormonal medicines which is produced by the discharge of active agent from female urine of postmenopausal period. This medicine is a combination of catabolized FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinizing Hormone).
Very often human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) is used during IVF cycles. Its effectiveness is specified by the ability to stimulate maturation of the follicles. Besides, HMG stimulates proliferative processes occurring in endometrium which prepare organism to the further embryo implantation.
What are menotropins?
Menotropins refer to the group of pharmacological medicines which include certain concentration of LH and FSH. Such medicines are used not just for stimulation of egg maturation but for male stimulation of spermatogenesis processes. Menotropins are usually accompanied with Chorionic gonadotropins to stimulate male production of testosterone or prepare for the egg implantation.
A weekly course of HMG therapy causes the imitation of follicle phase of a cycle. Such therapy is prescribed by amenorrhea of hypothalamic genesis as it increases the concentration of FSH in two times, LH in 1,5 times. HMG therapy specifies the development and maturation of follicles. When follicles are ready for ovulation, chorionic gonadotropin is introduced. As a result, follicles break and eggs come out.
HMG therapy is prescribed if patient suffers from endogenous gonadotropin deficit which might occur because of hypothalamic or hypophysial hypogonadism, amenorrhea, anovulation, ovarian cystic disease.
HMG medicines are used during IVF cycles to conduct ovarian stimulation. Usually one egg matures during each cycle. But success of IVF program much depends of the amount of eggs. To get more eggs, HMG is used. If US confirms that follicles are enough mature, transvaginal puncture of ovaries is performed.
HMG is usually introduced intramuscularly in 2-3 days after the beginning of the periods. Course of such a therapy lasts for 5-12 days. Doses might differ according to the patient’s health conditions and peculiarities of her cycle. Ordinary dose is 75-600 IU a day depending on the amount of the required mature eggs. Maturation of eggs is controlled by the US, check of estradiol concentration and Blood Counts. Judging on the statistics, HMG is an effective medicine of ovarian stimulation which cause ovulation in 75-80% of all cases.
