Self-rating diagnostic by Spielberg
Projective drawing strategies
Clinical interview presupposes the discussion of the various questions concerning general information, life and patient anamnesis of a potential surrogate mother, her relations with family members, her emotional state, fears and plans connected with a surrogacy program and life after it. Interview is composed in a way to define the peculiarities of the maternal sphere and emotional experience of the previous pregnancy carrying the own child. The special attention is paid to the changes of emotional relations with a child while his growing up, degree of child’s subjectivization, maternal comprehension, satisfaction with herself, her child and motherhood in general.
Self-rating diagnostic by Spielberg is a reliable and informative way to estimate the self-rating of anxiety at this moment (reactive anxiety as state) and personal anxiety (as stable trait of a person). Personal anxiety indicates the stable inclination to perceive the great amount of life situations as threatening and react to them uneasily. Reactive anxiety is characterized with stress, nervousness and unrest. Too high personal anxiety causes the disorders of attention and even fine motor coordination. At the same time, it correlates with the presence of neurotic conflict, emotional breaks and psychosomatic diseases.
Projective drawing strategiesare aimed to study the maternal sphere of a potential surrogate and possible inner conflict in it. Pictures (“I and my child”, I and a child I’m going to bear”) show surrogate’s relations towards herself like a mother, child she is going to bear, family relations and value of a child.
The key aspects of the test are the presence of the mother and child’s figures in the pictures; change of these images to animals, plants, symbols; content of child’s image and his age; ration of figures’ size and distance between them; isolation of child’s figure and characteristics of state in general (prosperity, uncertainty, anxiety, signs of conflict and animosity towards the themes of the pictures) on the formal signs of the pictures and woman’s behavior during the process of drawing (quality of the lines, position on a paper, details of a picture, shown emotions, utterances, pauses etc).
All these help our psychologists to understand if this or that candidate can become a good and reliable surrogate mother who is able to bear a child for another couple or not.
